Salisbury Museum is delighted to announce that we have appointed designers and heritage consultants to help us move forward with our redevelopment plans. Earlier this year the Museum was successful with a round I bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund and was awarded a grant of £87,400 to work up our proposals for the redevelopment of our archaeology gallery. The Museum is aiming to submit a round II bid to the HLF in 2011 to secure £1.5 million towards the costs of the new gallery.

Salisbury Museum is seeking a conservation architect, designer and new member of staff to move forward with our development plans. As part of our 150th anniversary celebrations the museum will be joining forces with the Cathedral and other Close attractions and opening its doors for free – all day from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 19 June. This initiative, first tried in 2008 as part of the Cathedral's 750 celebrations, attracted thousands of visitors from the local community and we hope this year will be no exception.

Salisbury Museum is pleased to announce that we have recently acquired a rare pair of 18th century flint lock pistols. They were acquired for £5,000 with help from an Art Fund grant of £2,500 with additional funding from the MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund. They were made by Richard Parrett, a gunsmith in Milford Street, Salisbury. The pistols are of exceptional quality, revealing the fine workmanship of a little known regional gunsmith who produced weapons that were works of art as well as firearms.

Salisbury Museum is opening its doors after hours on Friday 14th May as part of the annual, national celebration, Museums at Night. This is the first time Salisbury Museum has taken part in this event and it’s guaranteed to be a unique experience. Between 6pm and 9.30pm, visitors of all ages will not only have an opportunity to explore the museum after dark, but they will also find themselves face to face with some fascinating characters from Salisbury’s past.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has given the green light to Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum to work up plans to create a new gallery revealing the history and archaeology of the Salisbury and surrounding area, it was announced today. Development funding of £87,400 was awarded to help progress their plans.

Metal detectorist Sidney Boyce had a lucky find near Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire. Having only recently taken up the hobby he by chance found a bronze trefoil (three armed) brooch that was probably made in Scandinavia in Viking times.
