 Glass is an extraordinary material, with all the versatility and fluidity of a liquid, but the durability and rigidity of a solid. Its basic raw ingredient - sand - is cheap and plentiful, and it is also easily recycled and re-used, making it very economical. It first appeared in the archaeological record long before the Roman period, but it was just as the Empire was becoming established that it was put to its greatest use in a wide variety of ways. Denise will explain its history, the skills and techniques of the Roman glassmakers, and some of the ways in which Roman glass is now studied, including attempts by contemporary craftsmen to try to replicate the vessels made two thousand years ago.
