Printed and published by Frank Highman. Looking down upon modern Salisbury is the site of Old Sarum. During the Iron Age, (700BC- AD 43) a large hillfort was constructed here. It was later to be occupied by both the Romans and Saxons, before being chosen by the Normans for the site of a castle. Subsequently it was to grow into a flourishing medieval settlement that included the construction of a substantial castle, cathedral and Bishop’s palace. 'The remains of the Ancient City of Sarum which was built in a perfectly round form nearly 2000 feet in diameter at its base 1½ miles from the present City of New Sarum (Salisbury).
