An Inward View of Stonehenge from behind the High Altar
By William Henry Toms 1726 - 1775 The original print, by Toms, was used in a book written by Dr William Stukeley about Stonehenge. Stukeley was the founder and Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries. He was fascinated by Druidism. In 1729 he was ordained and became an eccentric clergyman in Lincolnshire and London. A friend, and bishop, described him as learned and honest, but a compound of “simplicity, drollery, absurdity, ingenuity, superstition and antiquarianism”.
