Coursing at Stonehenge (The Meet Round the Old Druid Temple)
By Unknown 1851 - 1875 This print appeared in the Illustrated London News. It shows that Stonehenge was a hive of activity during coursing meetings. Hare coursing, or hunting, was a popular sport for the land-owners of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The greyhounds were specially bred for coursing and the best dogs could become very valuable. Coursing is the origin of greyhound racing, where the dogs chase a motorised hare that runs along a track.
