Henge and druid
By Sparrow 1751 - 1800 The quotes that accompany this engraving come from two plays, both tragedies written by William Mason; Elfrida dating from 1752 and Caractacus completed in 1759. Mason (1724-1797) was born and brought up in Kingston-upon-Hull. In 1754 he became Vicar of Aston, near Sheffield, and then in 1762 he was promoted to Canon of York. His works include a lament for the poet and satirist Alexander Pope who died in 1744 and a biography of the poet Thomas Gray who died in 1771. He was a great friend of the artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, who immortalised him in a portrait.
