Stone Henge
By John Constable and David Lucas 1820 Constable painted Stonehenge three times, two close-up views and this distant one. David Lucas made this print in 1845, long after the artist’s death. The original oil has been lost, but the print closely resembles the sketches made during his only visit to Stonehenge in 1820. In the final picture Constable has added the expressive sky. It is likely that works by other artists influenced the composition of this view. It is similar to pictures by Crocker and Turner. Ruins only appear in Constable’s works after the death of his wife. Painting them suited his melancholy feelings, but he may have felt in competition with Turner.
