Stonehenge from the south east
By George Engleheart
1820
This is a very elegant watercolour. It was painted from life at Stonehenge and is one of several by Engleheart that are now in the Museum. This image is very successful in capturing the sombre and solitary nature of the location Stonehenge. The lone figure seems to lean against the stone, aware of the artist but otherwise miles from any other human. His dog, slumped at his feet looks exhausted. The clouds creeping in from the left are perhaps the least satisfying part of the picture but conveying a sense of impending trouble. Although beautiful, this is not a very happy picture.
