Stonehenge
By John Britton and Storer 1801 The collapse of the trilithon on the 3rd January 1797 was a major event, and frequently appears in images of Stonehenge. This print, made a few years after the event, clearly shows the fallen stones. It is from The Beauties of Wiltshire. The book was part of a series, called The Beauties of England and Wales, which described the natural and man-made features in each county. Britton wrote and jointly edited the volumes with Edward William Brayley. Some of the drawings are by Britton, but he also commissioned some of the best-known topographical draughtsmen of his day.
