Stonehenge
By William Westall and Francis 1828 This work is very typical of the 18th century topographical tradition. Before photography, people still liked to own views of picturesque sites or places that they had visited. Books about these places were very popular and the prints that were made for them were also sold individually. Many of these images show country people at rest or involved in simple work. They rarely show the difficulties and hardship of rural life.
