Stonehenge
By R. F.
1575
This print is a rare and early view of Stonehenge. This print by ‘R.F’. and watercolours by Lucas de Heere and William Smith, all dating from the 1570’s, are copied from a common original, which is unfortunately lost. The mistakes in all three pictures are very similar and they are all perspectives from the north-west. At this time landscape painting did not really exist in England, portraits were the main art form.. Landscapes or perspectives were more common in Holland and even the word landscape is derived from the Dutch language. As a result it was usually Dutch artists, like Lucas de Heere, who produced landscapes pictures during visits to this country.
