Stonehenge
By James Bridges 1826 - 1875 Stonehenge is viewed unusually in this picture, in the distance through two barrows which act like a frame. Your eyes are naturally drawn to the stones in the centre. It shows that Stonehenge is not an isolated monument but in an area that is rich in archaeological remains. William Stukeley and Lord Pembroke were interested in studying the archaeology of Stonehenge and the surrounding area and these barrows were amongst the first that they looked at. They chose these ones because they are on a ridge and within sight of Stonehenge.
