Stonehenge
By George Engleheart
1820
This is an elegant watercolour, painted from life at Stonehenge. This image is both accurate as a portrait of the monument and also idyllic, filled with a sense of rest and ease. The sheep are contented and mainly lying down. There are no people visible and Stonehenge is only overlooked by the artist, the trees in the distance and, of course, you, the viewer. Even the dark clouds seem to be passing by on a quick breeze.
