Stonehenge
By John Meggott Elwes 1840 This image comes from a small sketch book of many views and places around Salisbury. The picture was meant to be a working drawing that would later be copied and worked up into a finished painting. The sketch was never really meant to be seen by anyone but the artist so it has a fresh and immediate feel to it. A few light washes of watercolour add to the sense of a summer’s day in the image.
