Excavations on Cranborne Chase

While other archaeologists were digging on rich sites such as Silchester and Wroxeter, Pitt Rivers gave his attention to the rural sites of prehistoric and Roman date on Cranborne Chase. His first excavations on Cranborne Chase were of some earthen burial mounds (barrows) at Rushmore.

This image shows the remains of a burial from Barrow 20 in Rushmore Park together with the pottery vessel buried with it.
