King John’s House: A Royal hunting lodge
The manor house at Tollard Royal was one of the properties that General Pitt Rivers inherited when taking over the estate. In 1889 he excavated within and around the house. He revealed its early structure, uncovered two windows dating back to the 1200s and found many small objects. His interest in different building periods and in the post-medieval antiquities that he found demonstrates once again how far ahead he was in comparison with many of his contemporaries.
