Wor Barrow: 'The first long barrow scientifically excavated'.
Wor barrow is one of a number of earthen long barrows on Cranborne Chase. Pitt Rivers excavations here were arguably his most ambitious. They uncovered evidence for a rectangular wooden building that was used to contain six burials over 5,000 years ago. Later the site was covered with an earthen mound that was used a place of burial for the local population for thousands of years. The latest burials were placed around the monument in the Roman period.
