Roman Vessels
The five-piece vessel hoard, consisting of three trullei (a form of saucepan) and two wine strainer-bowls are outstanding examples of Roman metalwork. Copper-alloy vessels dating to the Roman period are fairly uncommon in Wiltshire although two strainer-bowls have been found in north Wiltshire, one from Westbury and the other from Marlborough.

One of the trullei is marked with the makers stamp of the workshop of Cipius Polybius who was a well known maker of trullei near Pompeii about 100 AD. It is thought that this is the first example produced by his workshop discovered in this county to date.

The Museum was able to purchase the hoard due in the main, to substantial grants from the MLA / V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Art Fund.
