Marshall, like so many of his contemporaries, started his career as a scenery-painter. He worked at theatres in Drury Lane and Covent Garden. He was the first person to use limelight on the stage and his drop curtains were used after his death. Later in life he painted landscapes, mostly in Wales. He was a prolific artist who exhibited 149 works at the Society of British Artists alone. Two of his sons also became artists; at the time being an artist was like other profession, sons would follow their father?s trade.
