John Britton
Artists
Britton rose from a relatively humble background, his father was a shopkeeper, to become a writer. He started his working life as an apprentice to a landlord of a public house in London, but the publication of his first book in 1799 marked the beginning of his literary career. His biggest achievement was as co-editor of The Beauties of England and Wales which systematically looked at the natural wonders of each country.
