Heath Robinson was born in London, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools, intending to become a landscape painter. However, he followed the path of his two elder brothers by becoming a book illustrator. The bankruptcy of his main patron in 1904 forced Heath Robinson to diversify. He concentrated more on producing humorous drawings for magazines. During the First World War he emerged as the greatest comic illustrator of his time. He was known as the ?Gadget King? because he created bizarre contraptions that mocked the modern industrial inventions.
