William was the younger brother Richard Westall. At the age of eighteen, while studying at the Royal Academy Schools, he was chosen to work overseas as a draughtsman. He had an adventurous journey and nearly drowned in Madeira and was ship wrecked on a coral reef in the Pacific. However, this did not put him off further travel. He visited China, India and Madeira again before going to Jamaica. On returning to London, he concentrated on topographical drawings. He became an Associate member of the Royal Academy. His best work is on a small scale.
