The Wonder of Illustration

Saturday, April 4, 2009 to Saturday, July 4, 2009

Booking: No booking required.
Cost: Normal admission charges apply.

For the first time, Books Illustrated is exhibiting at Salisbury Museum. The Wonder of Illustration features original artwork by Angel Dominguez, a contemporary illustrator who is constantly busy both in his native country of Spain and the UK and American markets. His most lavish project was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published by Artisan in 1996. Many of the original illustrations for this book will be available to purchase at The Wonder of Illustration exhibition.

These illustrations will inspire the imagination of children and adults alike, telling a new or classic tale through a visual medium. In the twenty-first century this work is, more often, digitally executed so the traditional skill of artwork on paper is becoming rarer; only the finest illustrators are now commissioned as publishers vie for market share.

There will be plenty to do and see in the exhibition, with fun games and also a storyteller who is coming to the Museum on Saturday 9 May to bring the pictures alive.

Get involved

To celebrate the illustrations of Angel Dominguez and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Books Illustrated is running a colouring competition for children aged 4-6, 7-11 and 12-16. Entries will be judged by Angel Dominguez and the winner in each category will receive one of his signed limited edition prints, valued at £165. Bring completed entries to the Museum by Monday 25 May and each entrant will get free entry into the Museum with one paying adult. Competition forms are available from Salisbury Museum.

On Sunday 31 May, from 11am - 3pm, the Museum has a special free opening which includes entry into the The Wonder of Illustration exhibition and to Alice’s Tea Party on the back lawn. Visitors have the unique opportunity to meet the illustrator Angel Dominguez who will announce the winner in each category of the colouring competition at 3pm. Proceeds from refreshment sales will go to Help for Heroes.

We look forward to seeing you there. Don’t be late for a very important date!
