Volunteer at Salisbury Museum
Be a part of our team: Protect, Inspire, Evolve.
The new Wessex Gallery coming soon
Would you like to play a part in Salisbury Museum’s new archaeology gallery – helping visitors, schools and families engage with the museum? Opening in late Spring 2014 the new gallery will be of international importance, telling the story of Salisbury and the surrounding area from prehistoric times to the Norman Conquest. We are currently recruiting volunteers for three new roles:
You will be part of our thriving learning department supporting and leading schools sessions (KS1-4) on the Normans, Saxons, Romans and Stonehenge People. You will also assist with our living history demonstrations (such as spinning and dying; pottery firing and flint knapping), inclusive storytelling sessions, and programme of family events throughout the year.
You will be part of an energetic team of volunteers welcoming visitors into the new archaeology gallery and guiding people informally around the space. You will be given the opportunity to plan and deliver spotlight talks to groups and run object handling sessions during the holidays.
You will promote the museum at events across Wiltshire, where as part of a team you will manage a stall with promotional material, object handling from the archaeology collection, and ‘make-and-take’ activities for children. You will also get involved with wider museum marketing including leaflet distribution, on line networking, web listings and contacting schools and groups.
There are also volunteer opportunities in other exciting roles at the museum:
This essential role enhances the visitor experience by answering questions about the museum and collections, and directing visitors around the space. You will also help to protect the collection by being vigilant with regard to safety, security and visitors.
Volunteers get involved in a range of collections projects to help conserve and care for the diverse collections which include archaeology, social history, art, costume and glass and ceramics. Projects include documenting and care of collections; photographing artefacts; and updating the collections database.
We would love to hear from you now if you think any of these roles would interest you. We are flexible with the time you can commit and will provide full training and support.
