The Museum would not function without the support it receives from volunteers. There are a number of ways you can help the Museum in this way:
Stewards The Museum needs volunteers who assist in watching over the galleries. This includes making visitors feel welcome, answering enquiries, ensure the protection of exhibits and Museum property and help to promote the Museum service. Some of our stewards conduct guided tours of the Museum Wednesday afternoons from June to September.
Behind the Scenes We also need volunteers to help ‘behind the scenes’. This mainly involves helping to catalogue our collections of archaeology, social history and ephemera. We also need to repack elements of our collections and have an annual big clean in December every year.
Cataloguing is absolutely vital work as we aim to have all our collections catalogued by 2012. People who have computer skills will be particularly welcome, although please don’t be put off if you don’t as there are other important jobs that need to be done.
Activities and Events The Museum organises a number of public events throughout the year including National Archaeology Days in July. We also need volunteers for our education service – especially to help deliver education sessions for schools. The Museum’s Events committee, which organises activities for members, is also entirely run by volunteers.
Even if not listed above, what ever your interest, there is sure to be something you could do to support the work of the Museum as a volunteer – please contact the Museum to register your interest. |
