Winterslow Beaker Burial

Winterslow Beaker Burial On display: Wessex Gallery
19th century
By Thomas Guest

This painting is one of four by Thomas Guest within the museum’s art collection of some discoveries made by the Reverend A B Hutchins in a large barrow at Winterslow in 1814.  It records the objects found and the building in the background could be the Old Pheasant Inn which was near the barrow cemetery. The objects date to the early Bronze Age and include a beaker, dagger, arrowhead and wrist guard for an archer. The original items are on display in the Wessex Gallery on loan from the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
