Lawrence Whistler was introduced to his future wife, Jill Furse, by Edith Olivier who was entertaining him and Rex Whistler at the Daye House in Wilton Park. Jill was staying with her grandfather, Sir Henry Newbolt, at Netherhampton House. Sir Henry was a well known Victorian poet. By kind permission of the Wilton Estate and the tenants of Netherhampton House we will be able to go inside this building with its ‘amazing’ (Pevsner’s word) early c18 facade. Margaret Smith (Blue Badge Guide) will tell us about the house and its famous inhabitant and then take us to Netherhampton Church. After lunch (self-arranged picnic, local pubs or Wilton House) we will meet outside the cafe at Wilton House for a tour of the private grounds with Ros Liddington. This will include seeing a panel painted by Rex in the Old Stables, the bridges Rex painted and Laurence etched, the newly excavated icehouse, the outside of the Daye House and the Old School.
Location: Meet outside Netherhampton House, Netherhampton, Nr Salisbury.
