The current and 12th Earl of Shaftesbury is restoring the home of the Ashley-Cooper family to its former glory. Begun in 1650 the house had considerable additions in Georgian and Victorian times. The Earl will tell us the story of the building and show us the grand rooms on the ground floor, which though not furnished, contain paintings, book and tapestries. We will also see the garden and enjoy tea and biscuits.
Prior to visiting the house we will have an introduction to the family from Sidney Blackmore, (currently Secretary of the Beckford Society but with an interested in the Shaftesburys), by way of the magnificent tombstones in the Georgian Church next to the House.
