Our four partner museums have chosen objects that tell stories of the region’s ‘wicked’ past – from grim and gruesome to strange and shocking! The objects will be displayed at each site in turn until October 2019.
For this part of the tour programme, the museum will be showing a Bellarmine jug from Wiltshire Museum. This fascinating object may look like an innocent bottle, but Bellarmine jugs were also known as witch bottles! Grusome contents have been discovered to include blood, urine, fingernails and human hair. Once filled, these jugs were sealed and hidden in homes to ward off evil...
Watch out for other Wicked Wessex objects at Dorset Museum, Poole Museum and Wiltshire Museum when you visit.
The Wicked Wessex Objects on Tour schedule is as follows:

Dorset County Museum – Cat o’Nine Tails from Poole Museum
Poole Museum – Scold’s Bridle from The Salisbury Museum
The Salisbury Museum – Bellarmine Witch Bottle from Wiltshire Museum
